Williams went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and later, a Master's degree in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Before becoming an astronaut, she served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Navy. Her military career included deployments in the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea during the Gulf War. Williams made the transition to NASA when she was selected as an astronaut candidate in June 1998.
