He played college football for the Canisius Golden Griffins.

His daughter, Kia Nurse, who played basketball collegiately for the Connecticut Huskies, plays professionally for the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA and won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games with the Canadian women's national team.
