He completed his schooling at Punjab Public School, Nabha.

He defeated the actor and four-time sitting MP Vinod Khanna of the Bharatiya Janata Party in general elections and became Member of Parliament in 2009 from Gurdaspur Constituency.

His wife is currently the sitting Member of Legislative Assembly Punjab from the Qadian Constituency.

He was elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha from Qadian Constituency in 2022.

He was appointed the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab assembly.
